Portable appliance testing (PAT, test and tag)
The interval is yours to set from risk, which is the conversion: office equipment on a four-year interval, workshop tools on six months. What does not convert is the test itself.
- Condition that replaces the interval
- Partly. A user check before use catches damaged leads and plugs, and the formal test interval is risk-based, so a low-risk office appliance can move to a longer interval while workshop tools stay short.
- Reading that proves it
- Earth continuity resistance, insulation resistance, lead and plug condition
- Why the interval stays
- The duty to maintain electrical equipment is statutory; the test interval is set by risk assessment in the UK (IET Code of Practice) and by AS/NZS 3760 in Australia, where it is prescribed by environment (for example six months for tools on construction sites).
- Evidence an auditor accepts
- Test register per appliance with the asset number, readings, result and next test date
- First move
- Split the appliance list by environment and give each environment its own interval; one interval for everything is what makes PAT look like theatre.
