Pressure vessel and boiler statutory examination
Corrosion is a rate, and a thickness trend tells you the rate. The examination interval is still the law, but the trend tells the competent person where to look.
- Condition that replaces the interval
- Partly. Wall thickness by ultrasonic testing and safety valve lift can be trended, and pressure and temperature are already monitored; the examination under the written scheme stays on its statutory interval.
- Reading that proves it
- Wall thickness at marked points, safety valve set pressure and lift, pressure and temperature history, weld or corrosion findings
- Why the interval stays
- Examination intervals are set by the written scheme under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations in the UK, AS/NZS 3788 in-service inspection in Australia, and state boiler and pressure vessel laws (NBIC) in the US.
- Evidence an auditor accepts
- Examination report per vessel with the next examination date, and the thickness readings by location
- First move
- Mark the thickness measurement points on the vessel so every reading is at the same spot; a trend from moving points is noise.
